There isn't a word you've written here I don't agree with.
...well that isn't exactly true, because I've never really felt the Jack/Doctor ship, even for reasons of disfunction, but yaknow, regarding Martha.
What really rings true for me is what you've said about how Martha doesn't especially need the Doctor. Something that's always bothered me about Rose and Donna is the way they had really done nothing more than stew about on Earth until the Doctor showed up (especially Donna, who apparently never did anything more than file, make coffee, and pine over men in her life). Martha, though, had talent, and ambitions. She was about to be a doctor!
Also I've generally always considered Martha far more capable than Rose or Donna, but as my record with actually catching this show is spotty, I'm prepared to be disproven here. I'm mostly remebering Martha's supreme competence in the whole Doctor-becomes-human incident, and also her initiative and resourcefulness in The Doctor's Daughter.
Actually I've found Martha to be such a remarkable character that sometimes I'm suprised the Doctor Who writers managed to come up with her. I desperately want her as the new medic for Torchwood just so we get to see her every week (because, as it happens, even aside from being an excellent character, she's also completely hot).
...this was a ramble also. A ramble in which grammar suffered. Sorry. :(
