- Apparently, Amy being a kissogram somehow means she's "stupid."
- A few people chose to interpret Amy's job as being a G-rated way of saying she's a stripper. (Hey, this IS the show where dancing=sex, so it's not exactly far-fetched.) Somehow, this is interpreted as a "smear campaign." Because...being a stripper is the worst thing in the world?
- Amy's miniskirts means she dresses like a hooker. I...still can't believe people have the nerve to even imply that. (What about Karen Gillan? She wears miniskirts in a lot of pictures I've seen. Does that mean she dresses like a hooker?)
- After complaining Amy didn't do enough in "The Eleventh Hour," complain that she shouldn't save the day or even contribute to saving the day. What. She saved the day in "The Beast Below" because that was her "prove herself" moment every companion gets, and it keeps the Doctor from dumping her off back home. In "Victory of the Daleks," it's a team effort; the Doctor knows reminding Bracewell of his humanity will keep him from detonating, but because the Doctor is an alien...Amy does a better job of it. But she never would have thought to try this course of action if not for the Doctor. You know, the entire reason companions are there.
- That the above is making Amy into a Mary-Sue. One, no...just no. You're using the word wrong. Second, Ten was the ultimate Sue, and I somehow imagine these folks weren't complaining.
- Never mind that the above complaint is problematic because the (primary) companions are always women. And also, I've never heard of someone complaining when the (SECONDARY) male companions help save the day.
- In general, the over-emphasis on Karen Gillan's looks. If I have to read one more damn article/post/comment about her being "the sexy companion" and not much else...
- Can't connect to Amy? Alright. Can't say I feel the same way, but everyone's different. It's a little suspicious that everyone just looooves Rory, when we know a hell of a lot less about him than we do about Amy. (He's observant, and he's more into Amy than vice-versa. That's it.)
- We know plenty about Amy: her parents are MIA; her aunt isn't terribly attentive; probably has abandonment issues; she's ambivalent about her relationship with Rory from the get-go; she can pick locks and catches Churchill pickpocketing the Doctor, suggesting a criminal background or at least a thrill-seeker; she's unflappable even as a kid--alien man doesn't scare her, and time travel doesn't faze her; she's a definite "alpha female" as Gillan said; she's as mad as the Doctor--her first thought on a space ship is to...go pick locks and get into trouble; she's pretty damned proud of being Scottish; she feels like an outsider; et cetera, et cetera...all revealed over the course of the last three episodes, with more to come. This is just off the top of my head, I'm sure I forgot something.
- Not liking River Song because "IDK," and when pressed, "she's too smug" or "she's arrogant," all suspiciously couched in a strange amount of venom and sounding vaguely like "she's too uppity." Yep, a woman can never just be confident, heavens no! Also, never mind that Ten was completely and insufferably arrogant in Series 4. But that's okay, because he's
- Or simply not liking River Song because she might be a love interest. This is just as stupid when it comes to Rose, or Martha (who wasn't really a "love interest"), or Reinette. But no one complains about Jack being in love with the Doctor.
- Really, River Song is pretty much a cross between a female!Doctor and a female!Jack. She's confident, flirty, has cool gadgets, knows things the Doctor doesn't, and wasn't impressed by him. Suddenly it's not so cool when it's a woman, but makes the Doctor and Jack overwhelmingly popular. (Although, in the WIN department, a lot of people do like/love River or are willing to give her a chance. Aww <3)
- Or River Song can't be a love interest because of her age. Yeah, Alex Kingston is 47 and Matt Smith in 27...but the Doctor is 900+ years old. HE's the old one, not her. And even if that weren't the case, so what? Alex Kingston looks great.
- That someone like Sally Sparrow would be a better recurring character. Seriously, I'm convinced Sally Sparrow is only so popular because she's conventionally attractive and pretty much a cipher. Fuck, I liked her, but she's not OMGGREATESTEVAR.
- So-called "fans" who spent the last five years hating RTD, and now three episodes into Moffat's reign have already decided to hate on him too. (No, trust me, I'm not talking about criticism, I'm talking about senseless hand-wringing, melodramatics, and venom.) I don't understand why these people are still watching.
...wow, that list wound up even longer than I thought it would be. *facepalm*
I should go find some reasonable Who fans on Dreamwidth to chat with. Yeah.

Oh god, I'm so sick of the constant Amy = stripper and/or prostitute bullshit. I like Karen's description of "alpha female", it's right on the money. Amy is a smart, curious girl who wants to escape her small town and really doesn't have a problem with using her looks. She's confident enough to wear provocative outfits (and ogle the Doctor), and I like that about her. Just because she does something a little bit naughty for a living doesn't make her a "slut" or "whore" or "prostitute" or "stripper". Stop it, Whofandom, with the slut-shaming.

Seriously? That just boggles my mind. To me, he's just background. I mean, I know he's Amy's fiance. I know we'll see more of him in "Vampires of Venice" and so I'll reserve judgment until we do. But how can fandom adore him when we've seen so little of him?

Did fandom somehow MISS the Tenth Doctor?! Smug. As. Hell. I liked River in "Silence in the Library"/"Forest of the Dead", and from what I've seen of her in the trailer for the Weeping Angels two-parter, I'm going to adore her even more. I don't see her as arrogant, just playful. It's not every day one gets to one-up the Doctor.

I really, really want her to end up being girl!Twelve or something. She is very, very Doctorlike, and there's no one you'd trust more than yourself, right?

Am I the only person in the entire fandom who just does not give a frak about Sally Sparrow? She was a one-off character. She wasn't that interesting. "Blink" is a scary episode and it's got some lovely moments, but it's not the ZOMG BEST EPISODE EVAR.
Anyway - had to concur with your ranting.
Oh god, someone needs to write that.
"Blink" is a scary episode and it's got some lovely moments, but it's not the ZOMG BEST EPISODE EVAR.
I think "Blink" is THEBESTEVER, but it really had nothing to do with Sally--they could've slotted in any character in her role and it would've been just as good!
Anyway - had to concur with your ranting.
LOL, thank you. =)
*(I didn't like Reinette because she seemed to be there just to show how awesome the Doctor was and to be a damsel in distress. Also I found it quite sad that she spent her whole life waiting for him and basically being subservient to the men in her life. Also I don't like the idea that the Doctor is a lonely angel or a lonely god. "Girl in the Fireplace" introduced us to that so I really loathe that episode for it.)
Anyway, back to River Song. . . .
Since it was just one episode, I'm willing to give her another chance. I don't care if River Song ends up with the Doctor or not. It wouldn't be the first time the Doctor's gotten some action and it won't be the last :)
Like you, I'm annoyed by the short skirts = whore. :/
I'm also annoyed with the argument that Amy and Rose are similar and are therefore whores. They're not! They're both awesome! I love Rose and I'm sure Amy is awesome too.
The argument that River Song can't be a love interest for the Doctor because of her age is ridiculous! As you said, the Doctor is much older! And second, who cares! He's a fucking alien. :)
I also think that if Sally Sparrow would have been a companion, people would have hated her too eventually. Sally was cool, but she had the potential to be a Mary Sue. Plus I like the idea of her and Larry running a bookstore called Nightingale and Sparrow during the day and fighting crime during the night (okay, I made that last part up, but it could happen).
When I was more active in Who fandom, I just stayed in my ship-centric Who comms because I knew that Who fandom is just wanky. I'm really glad I did.
Is brb_gallifrey wanky?
Seriously, people just need to deal. The Doctor is always going to have UST with his companions. If they don't like it, they can watch old Who (I love old Who, but the Doctor apparently was supposed to be asexual or something in the old Who-verse.)
I haven't watched Moffat's episodes yet, but I'm worried if I do, I'll start shipping Eleven/Amy. I'm trying to stop myself from shipping pairings.
