Watching Classic Who

One of the things Series 5 did to my brain is make me finally want to watch some of Classic Doctor Who, which I started doing last month...

I started with "An Unearthly Child," of course, which I enjoyed probably a little too much (I actually saw it twice, because I accidentally watched the pilot version first). Loved the First Doctor right away; I guess I just like my Doctor crotchety. ("What have you done, you stupid child!?") And kidnapping his companions. Then I hit the boring as shit caveman stuff, and didn't bother watching more episodes for a while.

So I skipped the rest of those episodes, and went onto "The Daleks." Now I see what people mean about these stories going on and on and on and on and on and on...I think I fell asleep at one point (Thals: entirely boring), but overall, I enjoyed it, especially when Ian climbs inside the Dalek casing. (Daleks: still not scary.) That is quality lulz right there. Also cemented my newfound EPIC LOVE for the First Doctor by his being all manipulative and bordering on evil...just because he wanted to indulge in his curiosity. Gee, thanks, ASSHOLE. LOLOLOLOL.

I liked "The Edge of Destruction" as much as "An Unearthly Child"; so between this and "Amy's Choice," I completely approve of more stories taking place only on the TARDIS. Did I mention I love the First Doctor? Like, a lot? (My ranking so far: 1. Eleven 2. One or Nine, TOO HARD STILL 3. Ten)

I watched was the first part of "The Aztecs," since there's supposed to be some great lulz in that, but I didn't watch another episode for the next week, so I guess I lost interest, and just moved on.

Didn't feel like sitting through another 6-part Dalek story of ETERNITY, so I skipped to the end of "The Dalek Invasion of Earth," just to see Susan's departure. Which was filled with WTF-age. And it's interesting that some of the dialog between Susan and the Doctor no longer makes sense, because of regeneration. (This is why I LOL when fans get mad if New Who contradicts the Classic series.)

Watching "The Rescue," I find I'm enjoying the shorter stories more, and if I'll ever love the longer ones. I'm a sucker for "THE HUMAN(S) DID IT" twist endings, what can I say? And fans are bashing Amy for her miniskirts? I'm pretty sure I saw Vicki's underwear at least once in this one. And I think this character is younger than Amy? That's the impression I got. Ian and Barbara's conversations were made of win, and Sandy the Sand Beast was made of lulz. When Vicki was upset that Barbara killed Sandy (lol), oh god, I started laughing when the Doctor just says, "eh, I probably would have done it, too" and was pretty much "get over it." And then I thought of Ten, and how he would go on a tirade about OH NO GUNS ARE BAD BARBARA YOU'RE BAD TIME LORD VICTORIOUS FUCK YEAH.

I'm probably going to skip around more and hit the regeneration episodes and entrance/exit episodes for companions to get a good sampling. Other than those, any particular episodes that are recommended?

I only saw the Fourth and Fifth Doctors as a child and my memory is sketchy so I can't offer any recommendations. I'm happy that you're watching old Who (or at least giving it a try).

I plan on collecting some old Who dvds or something when I can actually spend money frivolously again.

Anyway, I recommend anything with Four (played by Tom Baker) or Five (played by Peter Davison)

I know I haven't been much help with recs, but those are my thoughts.

If you have a specific Doctor that you want to see (or any episode), let me know and I'll try to find it.

Thanks! But I actually found a site that has all the episodes. Though it's probably a matter of time before it gets shut down...

LOL! Then they're really going to have an aneurysm if they ever see Leela or Perri (I think she was known for running around in short skirts, but you can't tell from the pictures at Wiki

When someone starts complaining about Amy wearing short skirts again, just show them a picture of Leela. *evil grin*

City of Death! It is with Four and Romana II and is one of my absolute favorites. Douglas Adams shares a writing credit on it.

Also, The Mind Robber, because it is the good crack. It's rather strange, but really fun! And it has Two and Jamie and Zoe.

Other good ones are (in my opinion) are Tomb of the Cybermen (Two, Jamie, and Victoria), Castrovalva (Five, Tegan, Nyssa, and Adric), Terror of the Autons (Three, Jo and UNIT) and Survival (Seven and Ace) but there's actually tons of good ones out there. Those were just ones I remember watching early on and enjoying.

Which parts? *curious*

Also, do go back and watch The Aztecs; it took me a few tries to get into it as well, but it's amazing ♥ (One gets engaged!)

Other stories I love:

One: The Romans
Two: Tomb of the Cybermen, The Mind Robber, The Invasion
Three: Terror of the Autons, The Daemons, The Green Death
Four: City of Death, The Stones of Blood (& others from the Key to Time arc), Horror of Fang Rock

Yay, I love it when people start watching Classic Who! :D

Mainly when Susan was going on about how the Doctor needs her take care of him because he's old. And there's another line that I'm not remembering.

I was probably going to give that one another chance, 'cause I really don't know why I stopped watching!

Thanks for the recs =)
