Fandom Misogyny

It's there even with the really good, smart shows.

This is disorganized and super ranty, because I should be working on a paper right now, but this just NEEDS TO BE SAID.

Dollhouse - I've become convinced the excessive vitriol towards Eliza Dushku from "fans" of the show is misogynistic. Constant complaining she can't act, when that's patently false. (Seriously, dumbasses, check out "True Believer," "Haunted," and "Instinct" for REALLY GREAT and VARIED performances from her.) And every week someone's saying they wished Summer Glau or Amy Acker were the lead instead...you know, never mind THERE WOULD BE NO DOLLHOUSE IF NOT FOR ELIZA DUSHKU. It's her show as much as Joss Whedon's. And the thing that really clinches it, is that I've never seen this with any male actors. I really can't think of any examples that come close. I'm trying, and I'm just pulling up more women--Sarah Michelle Gellar on Buffy; Sela Ward, Lisa Edelstein, and Anne Dudek on House (they can ALL act; yes, even LE, she just has shit material and seems pretty happy with it); pretty much each new companion on Doctor Who...

Dexter - Why do so many people hate Rita? Seriously, WTF? Pretend Rita is the main character, and we don't know about Dexter's secret. She's RIGHT at every step of the way. The woman came out of an abusive relationship with a drug-addict, and is trying to make sure the same thing doesn't happen to her again. WHAT IS THERE TO HATE THERE? Oh right, she doesn't let poor little Dexter have freedom from all his responsibilities so he can have more time to go kill people. What a terrible bitch!

Mad Men - I've only seen a very few comments on Peggy being "too full of herself." Which is laughable, unless you also consider half of Sterling Cooper full of themselves. She has an amazingly accurate sense of how important and valuable she is. Now, Betty is the one who gets a shit-ton of vitriol dumped on her, and it's BAFFLING. Don is serial-cheater, bigot, liar, and general asshole...but Betty's the bitch who should be kinder and more understanding. WTF? Betty was raised by both of her parents to just be a pretty trophy wife, and she does that. Society expects her to be the perfect little housewife, and she does that. Everyone tells her to work things out with Don and pop out a kid she doesn't want, and she does that. What does she get in return? Total misery. And on top of that, her misery isn't even acknowledged as real or valid. She's the only one in the marriage who realizes they'll never be happy together, so she calmly tells Don she wants a divorce. And then he tells her she needs to see a doctor, she's a hypocrite, a whore, and starts physically pushing her around while he's drunk to the point I FEARED for Betty.

...but, no, THE GREAT DON DRAPER is a victim in this, and Betty's his evil bitch-wife, committing the crime of not being PERFECT.

I have a whole rant about how viewers give Don way too much lee-way (he IS a product of his times, a bigot: "I won't have a woman talk to me that way," "you people," etc), and how it's simply bizzarre and kind of frightening that people want Don and Betty to stay together/work it out (hint: Betty's been trying to make it work FOREVER).

And it's not even like these are my favorite characters on these shows. It just fucking pisses me off I can't even read episode reactions without getting punched in the face with mind-boggling misogyny.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR WRITING THIS, especially the parts about Don/Betty. I've reached the point where I simply avoid any fandom discussion of the show whatsoever because so much of it is "Betty is a bitch for x/ a spoiled brat for y/ a whore for z" and "at least Don is trying" that I'm just like, auuuggghhhhh, clutching my head in agony, I don't even know. Betty isn't even my most favorite character on the series, and goodness knows the character has more than her share of massive flaws, but I feel like whenever I talk with people about the show I spend 90% of my time defending her because the character hate is just ridiculous. (And I think a lot of it overlaps with actress hate, too, like you mentioned for other shows; I can't even count the number of times I've read arguments along the lines of, "Well, I might like Betty if January Jones wasn't such a terrible actress, but she just makes Betty such a frigid bitch." SIIIIIIGH FANDOM.)

I LOVE YOU THANK YOU FOR AGREEING I FEEL I'M INSANE SOMETIMES.

Mad Men and Dollhouse fandoms are so hard to resist, because the shows are so smart and have generally good discussions...except for aforementioned misogyny D:

Constant complaining she can't act,

Are people STILL complaining about this?

While I don't think Echo is as interesting as Whiskey or Adele, I don't think it has anything to do with Eliza's acting abilities. The girl can act!

you know, never mind THERE WOULD BE NO DOLLHOUSE IF NOT FOR ELIZA DUSHKU. It's her show as much as Joss Whedon's.

Exactly! She was the one that got the deal with Fox and then she talked to Joss and decided to work with him. I don't know the details, but Fox offered Eliza a contract first and Eliza wanted to work with Joss so. . . without Eliza, we wouldn't have Dollhouse!

'm trying, and I'm just pulling up more women--Sarah Michelle Gellar on Buffy; Sela Ward, Lisa Edelstein, and Anne Dudek on House (they can ALL act; yes, even LE, she just has shit material and seems pretty happy with it); pretty much each new companion on Doctor Who...

When I was in Buffy fandom, I was shocked at all the hate for Buffy. Yeah, Buffy did some selfish things if you want to call them that (love affair with Spike, not killing Angel when he was Angelus), but I feel that if Buffy was a guy, no one would give her shit for any of her actions.

While LE isn't my favorite person and I don't care for Cuddy as a character, (I think my chances of liking Cuddy ever again are ruined), I think LE can act.

I can't comment on Dexter or Mad Men because I don't watch those shows, but the fan reaction doesn't surprise me. The men are perceived as being "misunderstood" and the women are "oppressing" them. *rolls eyes*

It's the notion of "she doesn't deserve you, but I do" syndrome.

Some people at House Meta had a discussion about that when dark!wilson fic came up (I thought I was the only one that hated dark!wilson before I read that post.) Anyway, they talked about what you're seeing: the misogyny and the person's feelings that only they could understand the "poor misunderstood" male protagonist. :/

Wilson, in this case, is in the place of the "oppressive" female that doesn't understand the male. /

Eliza Dushku's style of acting just doesn't work for me, but I know the difference between that and not being able to act. For instance: Jared Padalecki is not a particularly good actor. He has his moments, but...they're the exception to the rule. On the other hand, I know Eliza can act, but for some reason I don't find it convincing. I still think she's awesome, though, even if I prefer the Dollhouse episodes that are more ensemble-oriented rather than All About Echo. I'm not a huge fan of Tahmoh's acting either, which probably doesn't help.

I've never seen Mad Men, but I completely agree with you about Rita on Dexter. Julie Benz's characters are always getting hated on, which pisses me off.
